March 2026 - Pastor Heather Reynolds

Mar 23, 2026

In the latest episode of Pastor to Pastor from the Appalachian Conference, Pastor Heather Reynolds asks an important question:

Who is one of the most underserved groups in American churches today?

Families with individuals who have exceptional needs. Exceptional needs can include physical barriers, ADHD, autism, and other developmental challenges. Many families deeply want to be part of the church—but often struggle to find spaces prepared for them.

So how can our churches be better prepared?

Here are three simple ways to start:

1️⃣ Provide fidget bags at welcome centers so families can use them during worship.

Items like headphones, pop-it toys, chew necklaces, pinwheels, and non-verbal communication charts can help students self-regulate.

2️⃣ Train “buddies” to walk alongside exceptional needs students in regular classrooms—helping them stay engaged while also providing a safe way to step aside if they become overstimulated.

3️⃣ Create a calmer classroom space designed specifically for exceptional needs students—dimmer lighting, fewer distractions, and activities tailored to their developmental level.

📖 Luke 14 reminds us:

“When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind… and you will be blessed.”

When churches create space for these families, everyone is blessed.

The Appalachian Conference loves you.

We are praying for you, your churches, and your communities.
